What Story Does Your Saree Say

“Every saree has some story that reminds you of someone special or something that happened eons ago.”

At least the ones I wore, have, because I have only worn sarees for special occasions. Not because I don’t love wearing saree. On the contrary, it’s my favorite traditional wear.

It’s because I don’t know how to wear one. Or rather I didn’t know until 2019, when my dance teacher made it mandatory to wear practice saree to class. That’s a story for another day. But even now, YouTube tutorials are a constant companion.

Story Of This Saree

I have fond memories of this particular silk saree. It was a gift from my Chitta on the occasion of her daughter’s (my cousin sister’s) marriage. What makes it even more special is that I was 5 months pregnant with Devu, when I wore it for the first time.

Today, I wore it again to the Indian Embassy as they had organized programs to celebrate World Hindi Diwas 2023. For the first time, there was no tutorial to watch or video call to my Amma to ask her opinion. So either I became an expert or the saree being so lightweight and easy to wear helped me do it by myself. Plus, I had limited time to get ready and step out, before Bhavi woke up as well.

Sharing this sweet memory with Devu, that, the first time I wore this saree, you were within me, was a beautiful but hilarious moment. Beautiful because I was nostalgic and hilarious because she said-“Okay, great. Are you wearing makeup? I am going to play Amma.”

I made this reel to remind myself, when I look back, the beautiful moments of the day when I wore the saree again.
